Task B was a lot easier since the memory kicked in on Telnet in Task A, and for this one I only used HyperTerminal. The use of ASCII art to do the Star Wars movie is a great idea, and shows how some people will always try and overcome limitations that seem set for them. What I mean by that is when we were first able to “get online” from home many years ago, it was by dialling into a local Bulletin Board System and everything was text based (including the computer running DOS you were using to dial in, lol). There were no pictures as such, as there was no way to display them yet, and even if there was it would probably take a day or so to download them with the speed of the modems we were using, lol. That’s why people started using ASCII art, as a way to brighten up an otherwise colourless medium (literally colourless too thanks to monochrome monitors, not just figuratively speaking). What started out as simple graphics using text characters got more and more involved over time, even to the point of the early internet games on BBS’s starting to use ASCII graphics to display what had happened in your turn. Yes a turn took a day as your local BBS had to dial other BBS’s around the world to upload your turn and download other peoples, lol. Seems slow and tedious now but at the time it was amazing, you were playing a game with someone on the other side of the world, and still sitting in your own lounge room
. Anyway, as you can see this task brought back many fond memories, so yes it was very enjoyable to do. The picture below shows the completed Task.
